Unsure of which time zone we are in anymore, this morning we woke up early and got a head-start on the beautiful day. We had a quick photo shoot at the Wigwam Hotel, followed by a Safeway run to get some morning essentials before we began our journey.
Back on the Mother Road, we made our way out of the Grand Canyon State into the Land of Enchantment. Our first stop was Gallup, where we had brunch with one of Stephanie's Butler friends, Jenny. We enjoyed breakfast sopaipillas at "Jerry's Mexican American Food Cafe." Though delicious, we found that green chiles and cabeza-sized sopaipillas were too much for 10 am. We parted with Jenny and continued towards Albuquerque with Mark at the helm.
138 miles, 2 paragraphs on our Rte 66 map, 300 leisure novel pages, 5 brain teasers, and 3 naps later, we arrived in Albuquerque. We checked into The Hotel Blue and headed for the Albuquerque Zoo. Each of us have chosen one "thing" to do on this trip and today we got to do Meghan's "thing." Though hoping to also see the botanical gardens, we enjoyed our zoo visit. We even managed to find that elusive rhino that would not show itself to me in Kenya! We were impressed by Meg's choice and all had a great time.
The squad enjoyed dinner at La Placita Dining Rooms...more sopaipillas. We walked around Old Town Albuquerque, the first neighborhood of Albuquerque (founded in 1706), with its ten blocks of adobe buildings, central plaza, art and souvenir shops, and historic church, San Felipe de Neri, the oldest building in the city. Vital to any perfect day, we had dessert at Sonic, sipping limeade, shakes, and sundaes in our sweet minivan.
Now Mark and I are contentedly blogging while (most of) the girls are watching "The Bachelorette." We will be sleeping soon in order to be fresh for our journey to Amarillo, Texas tomorrow. Thanks for checking in on us as we make our way across the country on Route 66!
